“Why would someone do this?” my son asked after hearing the news of the mass shooting yesterday in San Bernardino.
“I don’t know.” I replied. “Our hearts and minds don’t work like that, so I’m not sure we’d ever be able to understand it. Just be the helper, Pav. Always be the helper.”
I went on to share Fred Roger’s mother’s words of wisdom to her son when he saw tragic events like these on the news. She told her son, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
I identify myself as many things. A mom, a teacher, an advocate, a daughter, a sister, and so on. But one thing is for sure, I am a helper. I will always be a helper.
