I had an interesting conversation with my teenage son on the way to school today.
The DJ on the radio was reading a list assembled by teenagers of what makes their parents “uncool”.
“Dancing and singing around the house.” the DJ read.
“Wha?!?” I gasped knowing I’ve now officially made the list.
“Oh mom that’s so you!” my son laughed while simultaneously pointing.
“There is nothing uncool about singing and dancing around the house.” I proclaimed. Because, er, um….I do it. A lot.
I went on to tell him there’s nothing uncool about showing your kids how to live happy.
He went on to tell me that dancing and singing around the house made ME happy, not him.
“Exactly.” I replied. “What if I went around living my life in a manner that made me unhappy? Then I would be showing you how to be a miserable, unhappy person. I want just the opposite for you. I want to show you how to have joy. I want to show you how to be happy.”
“That makes sense.” he agreed and was quite honestly music to my ears as any parent of a teenager will tell you, they tend to believe we have absolutely no idea what we’re talking about. Ever. #aintthatthetruth
So to all the uncool parents out there singing and dancing all over the house, you just go on with your bad self!! Our kids won’t think we’re uncool forever.
There’s a lesson to be learned in watching us be happy, silly and have fun.
