If you’re seeing this post, then I finally had the courage to hit the publish button. I’m simply not one of those girls posting endless selfies half dressed on the internet to get attention. I’m happy with who I am and don’t need to solicit validation from others. But this picture tells a story. A story that can be appreciated by others, but only intimately understood by those who have had a mastectomy as well.
When you’re faced with the difficult decision to undergo a mastectomy, it’s pretty common to look in the mirror and wonder what the reflection will be when it’s over. It’s a question I get asked by many women about to undergo the same procedure. So with a little courage and a lot of gratitude to my photographer, Jes Hayes, I share this picture for all of the women wondering what it will be like when it’s all over.
Whether you choose to have reconstruction or not, stand tall my friends. I’m confident your after will reflect the strength and courage that make up the previvors, the survivors, and the taken in this sisterhood we call breast cancer.
